As we launch our new website, we are also launching our new name and logo. We are delighted that after many months of praying, planning and listening to God, we not only have a new website, but our church has its new name of Beacon Community Church and we want to share briefly a little bit about the vision and reasons behind that.
Port Glasgow is such a beautiful location and a daily reminder of God’s creativity and love through his creation. We sit by the banks of the River Clyde estuary, which has shaped so much of Port Glasgow’s proud industrial history and the land rises steeply (have you tried cycling it!) to the hills behind, giving spectacular views of the area. You can see the importance of the river, of movement and of journey in our new logo.
You can also see the element of shining light which is a key part of the name and our identity. The word beacon is a light put in a prominent place, perhaps on the top of a hill or indeed at the water which can be easily seen and can act as a guide. There’s a passage in the bible where Jesus says,
“You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven. “
Matthew 5 v14-16
As a group of people trying together to follow Jesus, we are journeying through life as disciples – helping each other to learn more about the Christian faith and trying to become more like Jesus – the light of the world. It seemed to us that with this vision and in this beautiful setting, ‘Beacon Community Church’ was an entirely fitting and suitable name.
